In celebration of their engagement, Jonathan & Caroline recorded a song close to their hearts. “We Could” was originally recorded by John Prine & Iris DeMent for the album “In Spite of Ourselves”. Yes, it’s an actual record. If you have a turntable, give it a listen!
THE SONG
Recording this song pushed them to work outside their comfort zones, though they both have backgrounds leading to its making. Growing up, Caroline had many years of vocal instruction through choir. Jonathan has recorded many songs throughout his life, including an album of country covers with his grandmother before her passing. These familial elements make this cover very special to them both. In addition, the musicians who played with them on the record will be performing at the wedding.
THE PAINTING
The idea to record this song was sparked by a painting Caroline made of the original album cover as a birthday gift for Jonathan in 2021. She recomposed the painting with themselves in place of the figures from the original.

The picture disc artwork features images by their dear friend Garrett. He photographed the painting on the train tracks behind their home.
